About Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays has lovely beaches, oceanfront, water sports, nightlife and more.

Marked by beautiful beaches and historic sights, Hampton Bays offers an eclectic mix of culture, restaurants, night life, shops and recreational activities. Hampton Bays is in the middle of the Hamptons.

Founded in 1740 and named Good Ground, the town fathers changed the name in 1922 to Hampton Bays. Farm stands are loaded with local produce and fish and shellfish come right off the local fishing boats to the local fish markets. Hampton Bays is a year round community with a population of 9,000.

Hampton Bays is famous for its miles upon miles of pristine sandy ocean beaches, Peconic shoreline, coves, creeks, ponds, and the Shinnecock Canal connecting the Great Peconic Bay to the Shinnecock Bay and Ocean Inlet. It's a town surrounded by water -- waters for fishing, clamming, crabing, sailing, cruising, swimming, diving, water skiing, windsurfing or just to sit and gaze upon. Yachting from a 14' skiff to an 80' boat can be accommodated by number of fully-equipped marinas. The Suffolk Co. Marina at the Shinnecock Canal will accommodate short-term transient docking with beautiful Peconic Bay beaches alongside.

Horse back riding, camping, picnicking, nature trails, ballfields, bicycling, antique shops are readily available and the Long Island University-Southampton Campus is three miles away for art, music, lectures and concerts. Also nearby are public and private golf courses and parks. There are fabulous boutiques in Westhampton, Southampton and nearby Riverhead's famous factory outlet center "Tanger Mall".

Medical facilities are abundant with 2 hospitals within seven miles. Hampton Bays has a volunteer fire department and ambulance service, and a public library.

Hampton Bays is 1 1/2 hrs from NYC (90 miles), and year round bus and train service is available.
